May Day Baskets with Grocery Store Flowers
May Day is one of my favorite traditions! It spreads such cheer to deliver flowers to the doorknob of a friend! Recently, I created five different examples of May Day baskets that can be made with grocery store flowers. I shopped for all the flowers at Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, and just look what beauties I found! Friends or family will be so surprised and delighted to receive a May Day basket on May 1st! It’s a great tradition to keep alive!
You just need a few simple items. I used the May Day Basket with Ribbon from the shop. And I used: a wide-mouth pint canning jar (but an empty peanut butter jar would work too), water, flowers, and some garden nippers.
Some general tips on arranging a May Day basket:
cut flowers stems at varying lengths…some long, some short, some medium in length
cut stems on the diagonal
flowers look better arranged in odd numbers, for example: add three tulips instead of four
work with the natural tendency of the flower. If it has a bent stem, let it dangle over the edge of the basket. If it has an upright stem, allow it to stick straight up
since May Day is in the springtime, choose flowers with soft, ruffled petals
choose flowers that are light and bright for springtime…no deep maroons or reds
my favorite flowers at this time of year are: tulips, daffodils, veronica, peonies, ranunculus
keep turning your basket around as you add flowers, observing it from every angle, and filling in any gaps you see
